Yesterday I conducted my first web conference. It was a simple affair using Skype for audio but no video. The visuals were from a slide show presented using Slideshare. The technology used was basic, but it worked smoothly, giving my students the opportunity to hear from a guest speaker thousands of miles away in another country.
One of the ideas that the speaker shared that impressed me the most was the idea of having his students create their own textbook using a Wiki. That idea seems to have inspired at least one of my students to try it. Another idea that impressed me was a collaborative project, inspired by Thomas Friedman's The World Is Flat, between students in Asia, South America, and North America. I'm glad that I was able to expose my students to these ideas.
